MY STORY

Picture
I am a social worker and I work within the homeless community. Most  homelessness happens due to a mental illness and/or substance abuse. Since I was 10 years old, I have had a passion for eliminating homelessness. I vividly remember being devastated after seeing a man bundled up under several blankets, on the side of a church building, while it was snowing. I asked my father why the man was outside in the snow trying to sleep, thinking that it was unfair and so sad. My father began to tell me the many reasons one might become homeless. I specifically remember him saying that some people have mental illnesses and some use alcohol and drugs which can lead to them losing their housing. At 10, I had no idea what drugs were but was somewhat aware of mental illness, as I grew up with family members who suffered from several of them. I then told my father I was going to become an actress, and build houses for them; that everyone deserved to have a comfortable place to live. He supported me and introduced me to women who ran soup kitchens and served the homeless people. I am forever grateful to him for encouraging my dream. Although I did not quite make it to becoming an actress, I realized I could help decrease the stigma around mental illness and strive towards eliminating homelessness. To me, becoming a social worker was the best way to serve this population. So here I am, serving the population and working towards my vision that was created when I was only 10 years old.
